Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 200 °C / 400 °F and lightly grease a baking tray with the olive oil or line it with parchment paper.

  2. 2

Grate the zucchini and gently squeeze it with your hands or paper towels to remove some of the excess moisture.

  3. 3

In a bowl, mix the grated zucchini, mozzarella, cream cheese, chives, and garlic powder until evenly combined.

  4. 4

Unfold the puff pastry on a clean surface and spread the filling over it, leaving about a 1 cm border clear along one long side.

  5. 5

Roll the pastry up from the long side to form a tight log. If needed, gently press the final edge to seal it.

  6. 6

Cut the log into 8 equal spirals and place them spaced apart on the prepared tray.

  7. 7

Brush the tops of the spirals with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds if using.

  8. 8

Bake for 18 to 20 minutes at 200 °C / 400 °F, or until the spirals are puffed, golden, and the cheese is lightly bubbling.

  9. 9

Let them rest for 5 minutes before serving so the filling can set slightly and be easier for children to eat.

Chef tips

For a softer texture for younger children, grate the zucchini on the fine side of the grater. Serve warm, not too hot.

Substitutions

You can swap the chives for mild parsley. Mozzarella can be replaced with Monterey Jack or another mild shredded cheese. If you do not want to use sesame, simply leave it out.
