Instructions
- 1
1. Preheat the oven to 190 °C / 375 °F and line a baking tray with parchment paper or lightly grease it with a little of the olive oil.
- 2
2. In a bowl, mix the chopped cooked turkey, grated carrot, cream cheese, shredded mild cheese, garlic powder, and dried oregano until evenly combined.
- 3
3. Flatten each crustless slice of whole wheat sandwich bread with a rolling pin so it becomes thin and flexible.
- 4
4. Spread a layer of filling over each bread slice, leaving 1 cm on one edge uncovered so the roll can seal properly.
- 5
5. Carefully roll up each slice into a tight log and cut each one into 3 equal pieces to make the pinwheels.
- 6
6. Place the pinwheels on the tray with the seam side down. In a small bowl, beat the egg with the milk and brush the top of each pinwheel.
- 7
7. Drizzle or brush the remaining olive oil over the top to help them turn lightly golden in the oven.
- 8
8. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes at 190 °C / 375 °F, until the pinwheels are set, lightly golden, and the cheese inside is hot.
- 9
9. Let them cool for 5 minutes before serving so the filling can settle and they are easier for children to handle.
Chef tips
For a softer texture, cover the pinwheels with a clean towel for 2 minutes after baking. If you want them smaller, cut each roll into 4 pieces and reduce baking time by 2 minutes.
Substitutions
You can swap the turkey for finely chopped cooked chicken. The cream cheese can be replaced with thick ricotta, and the shredded cheese with mild mozzarella.
