Instructions

  1. 1

    1. Let the frozen cherries sit for 5 minutes at room temperature, about 68-77 °F / 20-25 °C, so they soften slightly and blend more easily.

  2. 2

    2. Add the almond milk, sliced banana, cherries, almond butter, cocoa powder, rolled oats, vanilla, cinnamon, and maple syrup to a blender.

  3. 3

    3. Add the ice cubes if you want a thicker, extra-cold smoothie.

  4. 4

    4. Blend for 45 to 60 seconds, stopping once to scrape down the sides, until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy.

  5. 5

    5. Taste and adjust: if you want it sweeter, add a little more maple syrup; if you prefer a thinner texture, add a small splash of almond milk and blend for 10 more seconds.

  6. 6

    6. Serve immediately in 2 chilled glasses to keep the velvety texture.

Chef tips

For deeper flavor, use fully ripe cherries frozen at their peak. If your blender is less powerful, blend the almond milk with the oats for 20 seconds first, then add the remaining ingredients.

Substitutions

You can replace almond butter with tahini if sesame is not a concern, or with sunflower seed butter for a nut-free version. Almond milk can be swapped for oat milk or soy milk; if using oats, make sure they are certified gluten-free if needed. Maple syrup can be replaced with a soaked date.
